MySQL Performance Tuning With Visual Explain
MySQL’s EXPLAIN command is a very useful tool for understanding how MySQL will execute a query. It shows how MySQL plans to execute a query, and can give insights into why an execution plan was chosen and how you can tune the query, your schema, or the optimizer itself in order to improve the query's performance. The Visual Explain functionality in MySQL Workbench helps us by visualizing the query plans. This presentations will show how to take advantage of the EXPLAIN command and its integration with MySQL Workbench. Using several examples, it will be shown how visual EXPLAIN can be used to understand how to tune your queries for better performance.

Øystein Grøvlen is a Senior Principal Software Engineer in the MySQL group at Oracle, where he works on the MySQL Query Optimizer. Dr. Grøvlen has a PhD in Computer Science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Before joining the MySQL team 9 years ago, he was a contributor on the Apache Derby project and Sun's Architectural Lead on Java DB. Prior to that, he worked for 10 years on the development of Clustra, a highly available DBMS. Øystein lives in Trondheim, Norway.
