The Virtues of Boring Technology

Some people tend to see MySQL as pretty boring these days, and yet it is at the center of many of the biggest and fastest growing systems. Booking.com is one of the largest ecommerce business in the world, and has been growing faster than Moore's law for more than 10 years. Managing this kind of environment is sufficiently challenging without introducing additional excitement. Hence Booking.com has been building their environment as simple and "boring" as possible, introducing complexity only to the degree that is absolutely required in order to manage the scale. This talk will highlight why "boring" technology makes sense for organizations that are busy managing growth.

Kristian Köhntopp has been working at Booking between 2008 and 2014 as a scalability engineer. During this time, Booking grew its business and databases by a factor of 100. Before that, he has been a Consultant for MySQL AB from 2005 to 2008. Currently he has his head in the cloud, building the Openstack based hosting for SysEleven in Berlin.
