Day in the Life

Steve Hoffman

I’m a Navy brat, so while I was born in Charleston, SC, I’ve lived all over the world.

I currently live in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with my wife and two children. Both kids play travel sports, so we’re on the road a lot. Being fully remote gives me the flexibility to get them to games and meets—while still staying productive at work!

Tell us more about your experience and what led you to Percona.

I studied robotics in school and never imagined computers could be a career path—until I took a job with the university’s computer department. That’s where everything changed. I’ve worked in systems and software engineering ever since, with a focus on server and application performance at scale.

I first discovered Percona in 2012 when my company lost access to our MySQL Enterprise Unlimited plan after Oracle did away with that support plan. We couldn’t afford the new pricing for our 250 database servers (plus 250 warm standbys)—especially not with the 45-day window they gave us. Percona Server and Percona XtraBackup saved us from what could have been a financial disaster.
A few years later, I saw an open role at Percona, applied, and the rest is history. I’m just a few days away from celebrating six years here! I now lead our core database development teams and work with what I can only describe as a multi-national crew of “awesomers.”
What’s a typical day like for you now? What do you like to do in your free time?

Since much of my team is in Europe, my day starts early to maximize overlap. My mornings are packed with 1:1s, skip-levels, syncs, and planning sessions. Afternoons are quieter, which gives me time to focus and get things done. I’m always looking for ways to make a great team even more effective.

I love that we have no-meeting Fridays (aka “FlowDays”), which I reserve for hands-on work with software and tech. Thanks to AI, those days have become even more productive—I can knock out three projects in the time it used to take to finish one.

When I’m not working or shuttling my kids to sports practices, I’m either at the golf range or lacing up for a beer league hockey.

What would your team tell us about working with you…

Probably that I talk too much! But I’d like to think they enjoy problem-solving with me—and find my Americanisms amusing. What I’d say about them is this: they each bring amazing perspective, they let me be myself, and they’ve helped create a space where authenticity feels easy.

What do you like best about working at Percona?

The people are incredible. There’s not a single teammate I wouldn’t go the extra mile for. I also love that I get to build tools for a user persona I deeply understand—having slogged through the same mud as DBAs, SREs, and developers earlier in my career. Hopefully what we build makes their lives easier than mine used to be! Oh, and being able to work from anywhere with a solid internet connection? That’s definitely a perk.
What did you do on your last FryDay?

Almost every FryDay, you’ll find me on the golf course. It’s quieter than the weekends, so I can sneak in a round early and still have half the day to relax. Last FryDay was no exception!

Where was your last off-site? What did you like best about it?

Our last off-site was just outside Athens, Greece. There were so many highlights, but the best part was finally getting to spend face-to-face time with coworkers I usually only see on Zoom and some of which I’d never met in person before… I also realized how short I am compared to everyone else! We packed in beer swaps, candy swaps, team-building, learning and planning sessions, sightseeing, and more—all in one jet-lagged but totally worthwhile week.
