Seeking volunteers for Percona documentation

Percona wants to upgrade our documentation to improve its readability
and to make it more useful for you, our clients and partners. We are
so busy developing software and handling your needs that we have
trouble finishing all the documentation! We think you can help.

Helping us will give you a chance to interact closely with lead Perona
developers and learn more about Percona’s products as well as our
development process.

Tasks include talking to developers, writing text, and interacting
with an editor. (Andy Oram, our O’Reilly editor on the book High
Performance MySQL, will take on the volunteer role.) You should have
some understanding of MySQL and Percona’s extensions, and of way
XtraDB and XtraBackup work.

Documents we want to start with include:

* Product features (we made a start at
https://www.percona.com/docs/wiki/percona-xtradb:features:start)

* Release notes

* Installation instructions for XtraBackup

Eventually we’ll also upgrade our user guides, a bigger job.

If this work intrigues you, please contact Andy Oram and
[email protected]. Andy has offered to coordinate efforts for free,
although we will pay him for professional editing.

I’m really happy to hear this. As a developer and not someone who works with MySQL on a daily basis, I’ve had trouble figuring out how to use XtraBackup *confidently* based on the current documentation.

Is there a reason why you’re not asking for volunteers for the Maatkit documentation? I’m thinking it could do with some tutorials/examples, especially given how some of the tools have changed quite a bit between versions.

Gillian,

If you want to help with Maatkit, tell me your Google Code username and you’ll have commit access right away. Are you on the Maatkit mailing list? I’ve asked for help with docs and testing many a time, and even set up open conference calls with everyone invited to discuss.

PS: Percona hires a Maatkit dev (and-a-half), but Maatkit isn’t a project created and owned by Percona. It’s just something we are the major contributors to.

Thanks for clearing things up about your relationship with the Maatkit project. I am interested in getting involved and will look into it.
