The Way Is Open: Control, Choice, and the Future of Database Infrastructure

2026 State of Open Source Database Management Report

How much freedom does your organization really have over its database estate?

For years, cloud platforms and managed services sold convenience. In 2026, the trade-offs are catching up: cloud bills keep climbing, licensing is unpredictable, and AI is creating workloads that shift by the month. We surveyed 300 US-based DBAs, SREs, and platform engineers to find out how database leaders are responding.

What we found:

  • 31% name rising cloud spend as their top barrier to cost optimization
  • 42% cite inefficiency or slow throughput as their biggest performance challenge
  • 54% say vendor lock-in makes it hard to adapt to changing regulations
  • 23% point to fragmented data architecture, not missing AI features, as the top barrier to AI readiness

Today, the real value of open source isn’t lower cost or visible code. It’s freedom and optionality, the ability to adapt as regulation, cloud economics, and AI requirements keep changing.
