At Percona Live 2017: Many Technical MariaDB Server Sessions!

At Percona, we support MariaDB Server (in addition to MySQL, Percona Server for MySQL, MongoDB and Percona Server for MongoDB, of course!), and that is reflected in the good, high-quality technical content about MariaDB Server at the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017 in Santa Clara.

MariaDB is a fork of MySQL, developed and maintained by some of the original creators of MySQL (most notably, Michael “Monty” Widenius). At Percona Live, learn about how MariaDB promises to be a drop-in replacement for MySQL – with better performance and more flexibility – in our MariaDB track. These sessions tackle subjects on analytics, architecture and design, security, operations, scalability and performance for MariaDB.

If you’re hungry for good MariaDB Server content, this is what you’ll probably want to attend:

Monday (tutorial day)

• Come to the MyRocks Deep Dive Tutorial by Yoshinori Matsunobu. Percona Server for MySQL and MariaDB Server will include the new storage engine in production. You should attend this tutorial if you want to learn how to use it.

Tuesday

• Check out Securing your MySQL/MariaDB Server data by Ronald Bradford and Colin Charles. This goes beyond the basics. Let’s not forget that there are differences going forward, like the fact that MariaDB Server picked the ed25519 instead of the MySQL sha256_password plugin. If you’re a DBA, this is one of those things that can definitely “get you.” So come for some comprehensive content on this topic.
• Check out Flashback – Rolling back a MySQL/MariaDB instance, database or table to a previous snapshot by Lixun Peng from Alibaba Cloud. MariaDB Server 10.2 will include some code from Alibaba’s AliSQL tree of MySQL, and this talk covers how to roll back a MySQL or MariaDB instance. 

Wednesday

• Ballroom E is basically “the MariaDB Server track,” so that’s where you’ll want to be most of all day. However, you probably don’t want to miss Krzysztof Książek’s talk comparing the proxies out there: MySQL Load Balancers – MaxScale, ProxySQL, HAProxy, MySQL Router & nginx – a close up look.
• If you can split yourself while attending the talk above, come see MariaDB Server 10.2: The Complete Guide by Colin Charles. The server is currently a release candidate, but don’t be surprised if a GA is right around the corner.
• Jean-François Gagné from Booking.com will hold an awesome talk focused on parallel replication: MySQL/MariaDB Parallel Replication: inventory, use cases and limitations.
• Common Table Expressions and Window Functions simple, maintainable, fast queries by Vicentiu-Marian Ciorbaru is important, considering the CTE’s and Window Functions are being implemented in both MariaDB Server and MySQL, but differently.
• Histograms in MySQL and MariaDB by Sergei Petrunia is not just an overview of implementations, but also provides comparisons beyond our ecosystem (including PostgreSQL)!
• Using SPIDER for sharding in production from the author of SPIDER himself, Kentoku Shiba. A lot has changed with SPIDER, and there has been even more progress with merging it into MariaDB Server. This is interest many of you.

Thursday

• It seems like we’re back at Ballroom E! Sergey Petrunia will talk about MariaRocks: MyRocks in MariaDB Server. One of MariaDB Server’s claims to fame has always been including storage engines. I think MyRocks is one of the most important inclusions of MariaDB Server 10.2.
• Booking.com’s Eric Herman speaks about How Booking.com Avoids and Deals with MySQL/MariaDB Replication Lag. He includes coverage on the “no slave left behind” patch birthed at Google.
• And for something of a bit of a twist, Toshaan Bharvani will present about Migrating from MariaDB to Percona Server: an e-commerce webstory. What an interesting case study!
