Patreon powers membership businesses for more than 250,000 creators and eight million patrons, processing recurring payments at scale. As the platform grew, so did the complexity and cost of managing its MySQL database infrastructure. Running on a database-as-a-service model, Patreon faced mounting infrastructure costs, limited flexibility, and the risk of vendor lock-in. The company also lacked the internal capacity to address business continuity risks — meaning a catastrophic failure could have crippled operations for days or weeks. On top of that, peak traffic events like monthly "Pay Days," where millions of patrons send funds to creators simultaneously, put significant pressure on database performance with little room for error.
Patreon enlisted Percona for ExpertOps, Expert Support, and Expert Consulting across its MySQL databases. Percona worked not just with the infrastructure team, but with engineering and management as well, taking a holistic view of Patreon's database strategy. The centerpiece of the engagement was migrating Patreon from DBaaS to EC2-backed database deployments — a carefully planned migration that completed with minimal disruption to the application. Percona also helped establish custom processes for managing schema changes in high-traffic environments, built out automation to address business continuity gaps, and provided active coverage during peak traffic days.
The migration from DBaaS to EC2 reduced Patreon's monthly infrastructure costs by more than 50% — savings so significant that even after accounting for Percona's service fees, total spend came in well below what Patreon had previously paid. Beyond cost, the move delivered better performance than any comparable RDS offering, along with custom maintenance windows, freedom to choose preferred software versions, and the elimination of single-vendor lock-in. Within the first 90 days, Percona identified and remediated Patreon's business continuity risks through automation and bespoke recovery documentation. Over the course of the partnership, Percona also helped reduce payout processing time by more than 30%.
