How companies build applications and deploy databases has changed drastically over the last 5 years. Enterprises are moving applications and workloads to the cloud in order to take advantage of flexibility, match resource consumption to actual needs and reduce hardware and software expenses. This panel will discuss the rapid changes occurring with databases deployed in the cloud and what that means for the future of databases, management and monitoring and the role of the DBA and developer.
Lixun works as a Staff Database Engineer for Alibaba Cloud, is a Senior Developer for the MariaDB Foundation, and have been an Oracle ACE Director for MySQL since 2013. Lixun is also Vice-President of the All China MySQL User Group (ACMUG), and have contributed numerous features and bugfixes to the MySQL/MariaDB community such as multi-source replication, thread memory monitoring, Flashback, etc. Lixun is also a co-translator of the Chinese version of the High Performance MySQL (3rd) and MariaDB Knowledge Base.
Sunil Kamath is a Principal Program Manager at Microsoft where he works on Azure Data services. He leads the product management function for OSS database services on Azure and recently helped launch managed MySQL and PostgreSQL service. Prior to Microsoft, Sunil worked at IBM Toronto Labs for over 15 years and held several technical leadership and executive roles in the area of IBM cloud performance engineering, hardware and software co-engineering, and product performance architect for IBM's flagship DB2 distributed database. He earned a M.S. in Computer Science at the University of Alberta.
Baron is a widely-recognized expert on database internals, web performance, and large-scale application development. His best-selling technical books and open-source software are used by tens of thousands of engineers every day. Before founding VividCortex, Baron was an executive at Percona. He has a degree in Computer Science.
Ann joined Percona in April 2013. During her time at Percona, she has held various leadership roles and is currently Vice President of Customer Success. Prior to Percona, Ann joined the Sun's MySQL Professional Services team in June 2008. With the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle, Ann's role expanded to include the various aspects of Consulting Operations: budgeting, forecasting, bid analysis, project coordination, project accounting, scheduling, and some contract work. Before entering the world of Open Source Databases, Ann had a career in retail and commercial banking which included foreign currency trading with corporate clients. Ann has a BS in Finance from Miami University and a MBA from Case Western Reserve's Weatherhead School of Management. She and her family live in beautiful Hood River, OR, USA.
Shawn Briscoe is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Computer Science where she studied under Fred Brooks. After a brief stint as a developer at a Chapel Hill startup, Shawn began her career on the business side of technology at Red Hat, sticking with the open source giant from its startup days to over $1B in revenue. Prior to Percona, Shawn worked in a consulting group specializing in open source business strategy focused on helping enterprises harness the power of open source software and culture. At Percona, Shawn is responsible for Consulting and Managed Service products.
