Sovereign by Design: Eleven Years of MyFMS and Percona

Micpoint B.V. builds MyFMS, a SaaS platform for mobility, facility, and asset management. Municipalities, grid operators, healthcare institutions, and large corporate fleets use it every day. The MyFMS Mobility Hub runs on an open source database infrastructure in Dutch data centers, under Micpoint's own control. Percona has been the partner behind it for more than eleven years, bringing 24/7 support and expertise in open source databases.

For Managing Director Frank Leemkuil, the database had to meet four demands at once: availability, performance, security, and sovereignty. None of them could give way to the others.

Percona delivered for MyFMS:

  • Stable infrastructure: More than a decade of support for the database layer under a business-critical SaaS platform.
  • 24/7 access to database specialists: Percona Expert Support puts specialists on call at any hour for incidents, unexpected behavior, or performance issues.
  • High availability across two sites: Percona XtraDB Cluster (PXC) replicates synchronously across two data centers in the Netherlands. If a node or an entire site goes down, the platform stays up.
  • Full data sovereignty: MyFMS runs on its own private cloud in the Netherlands. There is no dependence on big-tech clouds and no lock-in to a proprietary database service.
  • A foundation ready for international growth: The same architecture can roll out in other countries, including local data centers for customers with their own sovereignty needs.

The Problem

The MyFMS Mobility Hub puts fleet management, telematics, pool cars, keys and access, electric driving, and reporting in one platform. Data volumes keep growing. GPS trackers, CAN bus data, BLE sensors, and access events stream in day and night. If a vehicle won't unlock or a trip goes unrecorded, customers notice right away.

The data itself raises the stakes. MyFMS manages location data, trip data, and access rights. It has to be demonstrably secure and stay in European hands. Geopolitics and laws such as the US CLOUD Act convinced Micpoint that data in a big-tech cloud is not always under European control.

"Our customers expect MyFMS to work all the time, at three in the morning just as much as at three in the afternoon," says Leemkuil. "At the same time, we manage sensitive information such as location data, trip data and access rights. It has to be demonstrably secure and stay in European hands. Availability, performance, security and sovereignty all place demands on your database infrastructure and on your partner."

The Solution

The MyFMS database infrastructure runs on Percona XtraDB Cluster, a MySQL-compatible clustering solution with synchronous replication. PXC is open source under GPL v2. The cluster spans two data centers in the Netherlands. If a node or a whole site fails, the platform stays up and loses no data.

Micpoint chose open source by conviction, not just for cost. It values transparency, auditability, and freedom from vendor lock-in. Infrastructure, data, and access stay with Micpoint. Percona provides knowledge and support, and support access is controlled and granted only when needed.

Beyond reactive support, Micpoint uses Percona Expert Consulting and Services as a knowledge partner. The work covers cluster design, version upgrades, and tuning queries and schemas for large volumes of time-series data. It also covers new open source database techniques. Security patches and upgrades roll out in a controlled way, without putting availability at risk.

Micpoint operates under ISO 27001 and ISO 9001. It complies with the BIO (BBN2), the Dutch government information security baseline, for public-sector customers. Data stays in the Netherlands under GDPR, with clear data processing agreements and role-based access. The setup also answers stricter EU rules such as NIS2, which targets supply chain resilience.

Key Takeaways

For Micpoint, Percona's 24/7 support works as an extension of its own team. When an incident hits, Micpoint can bring in database specialists who work with complex MySQL environments every day, at any hour.

Leemkuil shared, "You don't buy support for the days when everything goes well. You buy it for that one moment when it really matters. At that moment you want someone on the line who knows exactly what is going on. We have had that certainty for more than eleven years."

Results

More than eleven years in, Micpoint hasn't had to trade availability, performance, security, or sovereignty against one another. The platform stays up through node and site failures. Location, trip, and access data stays in Dutch data centers under Micpoint's control. Patches and version upgrades roll out without putting availability at risk. When something unexpected happens at three in the morning, a Percona specialist is on the line.

The architecture also gives MyFMS room to grow. Because it runs on open source and Micpoint's own infrastructure, the same setup can launch in new countries, with local data centers for customers who need them, and without tying the platform to a single cloud provider.

"For us, sovereignty means deciding for ourselves where our data lives, who can access it and which technology we use. With open source and our own infrastructure, we keep the keys in our hands. That is not ideology. It is risk management."
