Percona for MySQL • A vision document • 2026

The future of MySQL is open.

Percona has built open source MySQL software for nearly 20 years. Percona Server for MySQL is a free, GPL, drop-in alternative to MySQL. Same database, none of the licensing fees.

MySQL runs more of the world than any other open source database. It is in the products people use every day, the systems enterprises depend on, and the platforms developers reach for when they need a database that just works. That future deserves a steward in the open source community — one that keeps MySQL fast, faithful to its roots, and ready for the workloads that come next.

The world we are building toward

MySQL is at an inflection point.

The workloads it powers are evolving faster than the database itself. Teams are adding semantic search, recommendations, and retrieval-augmented generation alongside the transactional applications they have run on MySQL for years. Operations are moving onto Kubernetes. Security, compliance, and identity expectations are rising. The MySQL ecosystem itself is fragmenting, with forks diverging from upstream and proprietary clouds adding features behind closed doors.

Through all of this, MySQL itself remains the constant. The teams that build on it should not have to choose between staying current with MySQL and getting the operational maturity, performance, and emerging capabilities they need. They should have both, in open source, on any infrastructure they choose.

Our identity

The trusted innovator.

Two words, one promise. Trusted, because the foundation of everything we do is faithful, reliable, drop-in compatibility with MySQL. Innovator, because reliability alone is not enough. We push the database forward in the open, solving the real production problems teams face today and building the capabilities they will need tomorrow.

Trusted

Faithful, reliable, drop-in compatibility with MySQL. The MySQL you know, hardened by our expertise and surrounded by the operational tooling that makes it production-ready at scale.

Innovator

Pushing the database forward in the open. Solving the real production problems teams face today and building the capabilities they will need tomorrow — vector, Kubernetes, modern security, PITR, observability, and the new operator surfaces emerging around them.

Vector search built into the transactional engine. A production-grade Kubernetes operator. Enterprise security parity. Nearly 20 years running MySQL in production.

Our two pillars

Reliability is the promise. Innovation sets the pace.

Pillar I

faithful and reliable MySQL Enterprise alternative.

Our foundation is the trust users place in Percona Server for MySQL. They choose us because we give them the MySQL they know, hardened by our expertise and surrounded by the operational tooling that makes it production-ready at scale.

Timely releases

We deliver Percona Server in step with MySQL releases. Teams choosing Percona should never face a meaningful delay in getting the latest MySQL features.

True drop-in compatibility

Anything a team can do in standard MySQL that has meaningful value for production, they can do with Percona. Migration in is frictionless. Migration out is equally frictionless. The choice always belongs to the user.

Parity with MySQL Enterprise

Percona Server aims for full enterprise-value parity with MySQL Enterprise. Every capability Oracle gates behind the Enterprise license — modern authentication (LDAP / PAM / OIDC), audit logging, encryption at rest, KMIP key management, FIPS-validated cryptography, advanced thread pooling — has an open-source equivalent in Percona Server. The premium feature set is the baseline, not the upsell.

Guaranteed quality

Every release is tested rigorously, including the interactions between core MySQL features and our own enhancements. QA is not a stage; it is a commitment.

Continuity beyond EOL

When community MySQL releases reach end of life, we keep Percona Server deployments supported and secure. Teams running 5.7 and 8.0 do not get stranded.

Running MySQL for a hosting platform or WordPress?

Nothing changes for you. Same MySQL, same compatibility, continued support past community EOL with more investment behind it, not less.

Pillar II

Driving the evolution of MySQL through open source.

Reliability is the promise. Innovation is what sets the pace. We are a primary force driving the growth and evolution of MySQL as a technology, in the open, alongside the community.

Pushing performance

From storage engine improvements to build-level optimizations, we keep looking for ways to make Percona Server faster on the workloads our users actually run.

Storage engine choice

Not every workload fits one engine. For write-heavy deployments where InnoDB’s memory and storage footprint becomes a burden, MyRocks is a leaner alternative — and we are firming our commitment to it as a first-class, fully supported engine in Percona Server.

Solving the hard problems

High availability, backup and recovery, replication, observability. We invest in the capabilities that production teams actually need, not just headline features.

High-availability clustering

Percona XtraDB Cluster brings synchronous, multi-primary replication, built on Galera, to production deployments. It remains a first-class, fully supported part of our stack — the proven path to high availability without proprietary lock-in.

Vector and AI capabilities

The next generation of MySQL applications will combine transactional data with semantic search, recommendations, and RAG. We are delivering vector capabilities directly inside Percona Server, ACID-integrated and atomic with the row data they describe.

Leading the community

We share what we learn, contribute upstream where we can, and convene the technical conversations that move the database forward.

Sticky value, not vendor lock-in

We create sticky value, not lock-in. Migrating away from Percona Server would mean losing the benefits of our enhancements. It would never mean being trapped.

Lock-in removes choice by making it prohibitively difficult or expensive to leave a vendor’s proprietary software or services. Our software is GPL open source. The unique features we build — Percona XtraDB Cluster, advanced thread pooling, key management integration, audit logging, and the capabilities we are building next — deliver compelling value that makes teams choose to stay with us.
This is our model, and it has been for years.

Where MySQL is going

The capabilities the next generation of MySQL applications will depend on.

Databases in the age of AI

The AI era reaches both inside the database and around it. Inside, vector capabilities live directly in Percona Server — ACID-integrated and atomic with the rows they describe, not a second system to procure and reconcile. Around it, we are readying Percona software — from monitoring and observability to everyday operations — for the AI era, so the tools and agents teams increasingly rely on can understand, diagnose, and manage MySQL correctly and safely.

Cloud-native by default

MySQL belongs on Kubernetes for the teams that want it there. Our operator delivers a production-grade Percona Server experience on any conformant Kubernetes cluster, and our work with Open Everest extends that same capability into a community-driven, vendor-agnostic data platform.

Backup, replication, and recovery for real production

Backup and point-in-time recovery, replication, and observability are first-class concerns, not afterthoughts. Percona XtraBackup, Percona Toolkit, Percona Monitoring and Management, and the binlog server we are building close longstanding gaps in PITR workflows and make MySQL runnable at scale.

Modern security and compliance

Enterprises need MySQL to meet them where their security and compliance posture has moved. We are expanding modern authentication including OIDC, key management interoperability through KMIP, FIPS-validated cryptography for regulated and federal workloads, and the audit capabilities aligned with SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and GDPR expectations that production deployments require.

Performance leadership

Storage engine work, thread pool refinements, and build-level optimizations all stay in scope. We measure ourselves against the broader MySQL ecosystem and against our own previous releases, in the open, on workloads that match what teams actually run.

A healthy, plural MySQL community

Percona has been part of the MySQL community for nearly two decades. We believe the community is strongest when it includes many voices, not one. We support efforts to ensure MySQL itself stays open, neutral, and accessible to the developers and operators who depend on it.

Our commitments

Concretely, this is what teams running MySQL can expect from Percona.

01 — Release cadence

Percona Server for MySQL will continue to keep pace with the MySQL release cadence.

Available as binaries, source, container images, and through the Percona Operator for MySQL.
02 — Vector · AI

Vector search arrives as a transactional capability inside Percona Server.

Available wherever Percona Server runs.
03 — Operations

The operational surface around MySQL will continue to evolve in step with the database itself.

XtraBackup, Toolkit, Monitoring and Management, the binlog server, and the operator, kept coherent so teams get one stack, not many.
04 — GPL · Open source

Everything we ship will remain open source under the GPL.

No per-feature license, no proprietary extensions, no cloud-only features. The choice of where and how to run it will always be the user’s.
05 — Enterprise parity

Percona Server will always aim for reliable enterprise value parity with MySQL Enterprise.

Every feature Oracle gates behind the Enterprise license has an open-source counterpart in Percona Server.

Still all-in on MySQL

And Helping Lead What’s Next.

OurSQL is a community effort to keep MySQL open, neutral, and governed in the interest of the people who depend on it — a response to a fragmenting ecosystem, not a replacement for MySQL. Percona is helping lead it for the same reason we do everything else here: so this database has a future that belongs to its community.

For teams running Percona Server for MySQL today, nothing changes. The releases, the compatibility, the support, and the roadmap on this page all continue. If anything, OurSQL is one more way we are investing in the future of the database you already run.
