The Problem

Tukaiz offers a wide array of imaging, print, and interactive services, including creative, prepress, and color correction; digital, large format and banner printing; website development and hosting; and much more. The company increasingly relies on custom-built marketing management portals and print production systems to enable its larger clients, such as major fast food chains and major entertainment brands, to order their print products online. The company also manages inventory for its clients, providing a variety of fulfillment options. To support all these capabilities, the company built a backend order management system that marshalls orders through the production and fulfillment processes. The backend system, including databases, and customer portals are hosted at two remote, high-availabiliy data centers to improve performance and provide redundancy.

The Solution

After so much success working with Percona Expert Consulting and Services and Percona Expert Support, Tukaiz explored moving its two existing MySQL Enterprise builds to Percona Server. The databases support a number of applications, including ecommerce, production records and logs, client configuration data, and even an insurance agency’s agent and prospect databases. Testing showed that builds based on Percona Server were more efficient and Percona Server had also proven to be more stable. “The Percona team is very knowledgeable, so they are able to deliver a high-performance database solution,” said Hanna.

Percona Toolkit, a collection of command-line tools, simplifies MySQL server and system tasks. Tukaiz currently uses the pt-query-digest tool to analyze MySQL queries from slow, general, and binary log files, and the company is beginning to adopt other tools from the collection. “Percona Toolkit is a great resource for isolating bottlenecks and validating the information necessary for making proper adjustments,” said Hanna.

Tukaiz uses Percona Monitoring Plugins to run daily reports that track how development activities are impacting performance. With Percona Monitoring Plugins, Tukaiz can monitor its MySQL server performance and stay proactive about resolving any potential issues.

Tukaiz has also deployed Percona XtraBackup, the only open source hot backup software for InnoDB and Percona XtraDB. With Percona XtraBackup, Tukaiz is able to automatically run non-blocking backups without impacting server load and without an additional licensing fee.
