MySQL Operations Training from Percona

You will learn

  • How to maintain MySQL in production
  • How to minimize downtime
  • Capacity planning for MySQL
  • How to improve performance of an existing application.

Not covered

A one-day hands-on class on MySQL operations, where students must team up to solve a series of challenges that normally arise in production MySQL environments.

  • Do you have a MySQL deployment in production?
  • Do you want to know how to handle MySQL maintenance and operations tasks more efficiently?
  • Do you have complete MySQL monitoring in place, and can you pull up graphs to explain every problem?
  • Have you tested your MySQL backup and restore, and do you know they are working correctly?

Attendees of this workshop will be able to:

  • Work as a team, and practice MySQL-focused tasks in a hands-on environment, with an expert instructor standing by to answer any questions.
  • Be methodical about instrumentation, capacity planning, and making changes to a MySQL-based application in a production environment.
  • Solve many common MySQL problems and design mistakes - situations that have intentionally been placed in front of you in a sample application.

Who should attend:

This course is designed for teams of 2-3 cross-skilled MySQL Database Administrators, System Administrators and MySQL Application Developers. Individuals are welcome, and will be teamed up with other students on the day.

Prerequisites:

This course is designed for attendees who are maintaining a MySQL deployment in production, or work in a System Administration/SRE/Operations role. You will have difficulty in this course if you are a more casual MySQL user - you should look towards our Developer and DBA courses first.

You will be required to make some changes to a LAMP (PHP) sample application in order to install instrumentation, and make performance enhancements. The goal of the sample application is to apply context - you do not need to be a master programmer, but it does help to have someone with a development background on your team. Although the sample application is written in PHP, all optimizations you are asked to perform are equally applicable to other environments.

For companies sending multiple people to attend this training, we recommend that attendees form teams based on cross-skilling. The teams at the greatest advantage are those that can wear all hats - DBA, sysadmin and developer.

The sample application will be deployed on Linux. You will benefit from having a basic understanding of shell scripting, and some auxiliary skills which will not be directly taught in the class. i.e. In the main exercise for the day we will have some suggested optimizations, but teams that complete these with enough time remaining are encouraged to experiment with additional optimization. If you want to change webservers, filesystems, or compile your own version of PHP that's fine with us. We will be able to measure the difference and tell you if it was worth it.

You are welcome to contact us if you would like to ask more questions, and if you meet the requirements for this course.

Format:

This course is delivered as a one day hands-on involving team work. Students will be provided with Linux desktop PCs, and log-in details to a series of Amazon EC2 machines which they must perform tasks on.

Students coming from the same company will be asked to form teams of 2-3 people. All other attendees will be assigned a team by the instructor.

Applies to MySQL Versions:

MySQL and Percona Server versions 5.0 and newer
