In this hands on lab, Rene Cannao will walk through evaluation of operational errors and issues in MySQL 5.6, and recovering from them. This will be a hands-on workshop where possible. Specific items that cannot easily be reproduced will be done via Amazon/EC2 and screencast. 1. Instance Crashes and Hangs - * Evaluating error logs and troubleshooting methodologies. * Determining issues (OOM, panics, system crashes, filesystem freezes/space issues, corruption. * Recovery methods and follow-up after triage. 2. MySQL Replication - * Replication high level overview and diagnosing issues. * IO thread and SQL thread issues, relay log corruption, binlog corruption, duplicate errors, non Deterministic SQL/data drift * Recovery methods and follow-up after triage, including checksum/sync methods. 3. Significant Performance Issues * Diagnosing performance issues via OS tools, performance counters/graphs and MySQL utilities/commands * Mitigating/Triaging issues with such techniques as relaxing durability, dynamic variable changes, command line fixes and managing connections/commands

In the last 4-5 years his experience was focused mainly on MySQL, working as Senior MySQL Support Engineer at Sun/Oracle and now as Senior Operational DBA at Blackbird, (formerly PalominoDB). In this period he build an analytic and problem solving mindset and he is always eager to take on new challenges, especially if they are related to high performance.

Alkin has extensive experience in enterprise relational databases working in various sectors for large corporations. With more then 20 years of industry experience he has acquired skills for managing large projects from ground up to production. For the past five years he's been focusing on e-commerce, SaaS and MySQL technologies. He managed and architected database topologies for high volume site at eBay Intl. He has several years of experience on 24X7 support and operational tasks as well as improving database systems for major companies. Currently leading global operations team on Tier 1 support for MySQL customers.
Gillian joined Okta in March 2015. She's worked as a DBA at such companies as PalominoDB/BlackbirdIT, Pythian and Disney, and spent 3 years on the MySQL support team at Oracle. Her home base is Vancouver, BC.
