SmugMug's Database Migration to AWS
Cloud and Virtualization
3 April 4:30PM - 5:20PM @ Ballroom C
50 minutes conference
SmugMug spent six years split between its data centers and Amazon Web Services, using the data centers to host Percona MySQL DBs. Find out how and why SmugMug went 100% AWS, migrating 30TB of databases, hundreds of front ends, load balancing, and caches, across the US in one night with zero downtime. I'll show you specific techniques that made our large-scale database migration a resounding success--moving massive MySQL databases, testing and sizing a new AWS infrastructure, automating AWS operations, managing the risks involved in wholesale infrastructure change, architecting for reliability in multiple AWS availability zones. I'll discuss the choices available for using MySQL with AWS, including SSD in EC2, Direct Connect, RDS, EBS/PIOPS. I'll talk about the performance, scalability, operational, and business benefits and challenges we've seen since migrating our databases.
