While lots of industry are obsessed about Big Data - analysis of vast amounts of records, there's no less interesting effort to actually build systems that power transaction processing for huge scale systems. Managing small data at scale involves careful thinking about algorithms, efficiency and performance - a system that is too fast may be also too expensive, a system that is too slow can stop the business. Recognizing patterns in data may be more important than obsessing about RDBMS internals, and RDBMS internals still have to be flawless to provide always-on availability. Economics of small data span computation, storage, networking and human resources. This talk is about the Small Data story as seen from one of largest MySQL operations, and where it is going next.
