Migrating A Financial Services Application from Sybase to MySQL

A discussion of the motivation for the migration away from Sybase ASE to MySQL, the factors that influenced the decision to migrate and the approach taken to the migration.

We will explore some of the key issues that had to be resolved, including

  • Creating a viable backout solution to protect against failure of the migration plan,
  • Addressing the lack of MySQL skills within the organisation
  • Solving issues related to differing datatype conversions
  • Ensuring the safety of the data within the MySQL instances.

The migration is currently ongoing, with a number of challenges still remaining

  • Creation of a reporting instance containing aggregated data
  • Fan-in replication
  • Removal of the last remnants of the old system

Senior Software Architect, SkySQL Ab

Mark has worked in the computer industry for almost 30 years, this has included many roles in various software companies developing network and imaging applications. Prior to joining SkySQL he worked at Sybase as chief designer and project leader for the database kernel development team.
