Early MySQL Director Joins Percona as Chief Operating Officer
Tom Basil, MySQL Employee #11, Led Support Team
PLEASANTON, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Percona LLC, provider of pay-as-you-go consulting and support for MySQL databases, announced today the appointment of Tom Basil as Chief Operating Officer of the company.
Previously, Basil was Director of Support for MySQL AB for nearly eight years, serving from the inception of MySQL AB's support team until after its $1 billion acquisition by Sun Microsystems. Basil's team became home for many senior MySQL technologists, growing to 60 persons in 15 nations, all working over the Internet from their homes. His staff won unsolicited customer compliments from customers year after year for their unique approach (see http://www.mysql.com/support/quotes.html) and was featured in Fortune Magazine (see http://tinyurl.com/5fbfho).
"I believe Percona is poised to become one of the great micro-multinationals of high technology," said Basil. "It gathers brilliant technologists from across the globe in a 100% virtual workforce, mixed with a passion for customer service. For example, Percona-built binaries solve a range of problems for database users via fixes and enhancements not today available in mainstream MySQL."
Reminiscing, Basil added, "I was [Percona CEO] Peter Zaitsev's and [Percona CTO] Vadim Tkachenko's boss for four years at MySQL when they led our High Performance Support Group. I know their expertise in MySQL and InnoDB topics is unmatched. More importantly, they have replicated in Percona the values of MySQL's founders [Monty Widenius and David Axmark] that led to their enormous early success: a cherry-picked virtual workforce, practical common sense about what customers truly need, and a deep loyalty to employees and their families. I am happy to now have them as my boss!"
Basil works from his home in the Baltimore, Maryland area, where he lives with his wife of 22 years and their six children.
